ALBRECHT DÜRER (1471-1528)

Desiderius Erasmus

1526

RCIN 800114

The artist Albrecht Dürer met the philosopher and theologian Desiderius Erasmus (1466-1536) in 1520, when the two dined together. In 1526, Dürer made this print of Erasmus, showing him as a scholar at work at his desk. In the Greek inscription, Dürer suggests that a better portrait of Erasmus could be found in his books than in the picture he had produced.
