The Great White South
Ponting’s account of the Terra Nova expedition, lavishly illustrated with his photographs, was hugely popular, undergoing eleven reprints in the author’s lifetime. He hoped that the book would inspire a new generation of British children to emulate the courage of Scott and his men, just as his earlier photographs and films of the Antarctic had inspired the men in the trenches in the First World War.
