HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

Grotto in an iceberg

5 Jan 1911

RCIN 2580016

This photograph of an ice grotto shows the same location as the adjacent image, but the two photographs were taken almost a year apart. Both Ponting and Scott were struck by the colours of the ice inside the grotto; they were a rich mix of blues, purples and greens. Ponting thought that this photograph, framing the Terra Nova, was one of his best.
