GUY MIEGE (1644-1718)

A Relation of three embassies from His Sacred Majestie Charles II to the Great Duke of Muscovie, the King of Sweden, and the King of Denmark

1669

RCIN 1072024

The Earl of Carlisle’s embassy to Russia had one chief purpose – to renew exclusive, tariff-free trading rights, which had lapsed at the end of Charles I’s reign in 1649. The mission was not successful but it gave Miège the opportunity to visit a little-known country, and publish his observations.

Acquired by George IV, when Prince of Wales.
