The daughters of George III and Queen Charlotte spent much of their time engaged in artistic pursuits and botany. Like their brothers, the Princesses benefited from the tuition of artists such as Mrs Delany (1700 – 88) and Mary Moser (1744 – 1819). This watercolour by Charlotte, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter, may have been influenced by Mary Moser, the leading flower painter of the age and one of the two female founder members of the Royal Academy. Examples of Mary Moser’s flower paintings can be found at Frogmore House, which served as a private royal retreat at Windsor from the early 1790s.
