MARCUS ADAMS (1875-1959)

The Royal Family, including Dookie, at Buckingham Palace, 20 December 1938

20 Dec 1938

RCIN 2943768

This photograph posed certain technical problems for Adams. The large group had to be taken with a very wide aperture; this put the chandeliers in the background out of focus. He therefore took a second photograph of the background alone, from exactly the same position. The background in the first negative was bleached out, then the two negatives were bound together and the image was printed from this double negative. Dookie, standing beside Princess Elizabeth, had been coaxed into position using a biscuit placed on the King’s shoe.
