ISACK VAN OSTADE (HAARLEM 1621-HAARLEM 1649)

Travellers outside an Inn

Signed and dated 1647

RCIN 405216

A prosperous couple stop on a journey to rest at an inn. This mundane episode allows van Ostade to depict a typical Dutch scene; the inn homely and welcoming; the peasants quietly industrious, offloading baggage to feed the weary horse. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 2
