GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

The Entry of the Animals into the Ark

c. 1650

RCIN 830449

Noah’s three sons herd the animals from a dark wood towards the bright horizon where Noah stands beside the Ark. The sunlit flank of the horse is mostly just blank paper, yet it is the most compelling feature of the entire print. Perhaps surprisingly, Castiglione did not take the opportunity to include any animals more exotic than a pair of guinea pigs.
