GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

St Bartholomew

c. 1655

RCIN 903982

Bound to a tree, the saint awaits his martyrdom by flaying with a mixture of fear and devotion. The drawing is close in manner to Castiglione’s series of Franciscan saints (cats 66 – 70), though less heavily worked.
