GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

A shepherd boy on a horse

c. 1635

RCIN 830470

This is one of Castiglione’s first prints, and the atmospheric light effects demonstrate knowledge of the etchings of Claude Lorrain (see below). All known impressions of this print show scratches and corrosion to the plate and are probably later pulls. The etching may thus have been a private experiment, with no sizeable edition taken at the time. Cat. 3
