GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

A landscape with shepherds and a flock

c. 1640-45

RCIN 904089

By the 1640s, Castiglione’s increased confidence in his handling of oil on paper allowed him to experiment with his marks and textures. The foliage at lower left shows a variety of touch and a subtle range of colours that save even the densest areas of brushwork from becoming congested. Cat. 22
