God in Majesty c. 1400
Bodycolour, gold leaf and gold paint on vellum | 37.5 x 27.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 925010
-
Here gold leaf has been applied to the ornate borders surrounding the image of God in Majesty and also forms the haloes of the religious figures. In places the gold leaf has also been tooled and burnished to vary the texture. Gold paint has also been applied with a brush to provide finer details, particularly the rays which emanate from God the Father. This grandeur was leavened by the artist’s addition of an illusionistic fly in the upper right border of God in Majesty.
