  • Small room with wood panelling. Windows almost opposite each other. Carpet in centre, fireplace to left. Pictures on walls. Another door at far end. Side table and stools at far end. China chest to right with porcelain jars.

The paintings in this room can be identified from the 1818 inventory of Kensington Palace. The two narrow paintings over the windows to the left are Schiavone’s scenes from the story of Jacob (left, 402891 & right 402922, though we can just see the frame). Over the mantle Monnoyer’s Flower Piece (401044) hangs over Girolamo da Treviso’s anti-Papal allegory (405748). The wall opposite us is dominated by Federico Zuccaro’s Calumny of Apelles (405695). To its left hangs a portrait of the Duke of Alba after Titian (406115) over a North Italian head of Christ (402621); underneath these paintings we see Cariani’s Adoration of the Shepherds (left, 402846) and Titian’s Madonna and Saints (right, 402916). The overdoor is Renieri’s Warrior (402936); to the right of the door an Italian Lucretia (subsequently destroyed, 4400121) hangs over Jacques Cortois’s Cavalry Skirmish (405687). The full-length portrait between the windows depicts George I’s sister, Sophie Charlotte, Queen of Prussia (406764). She hangs over three small historical portraits, which are difficult to recognise, though one might be Elizabeth Woodville (406785).
