The Norman Gateway and Moat Garden, Windsor Castle
Paul Sandby first worked as a military draughtsman and in 1747 was assigned to the Military Survey in Scotland, mapping the Highlands after the Jacobite Rebellion. Later he joined his brother Thomas in Windsor and produced many views of Windsor Castle. This watercolour shows the ‘Norman Gateway’ (actually built c.1360) with the adjoining residence of the Castle Housekeeper, and the garden in the dry ditch surrounding the Round Tower.
