-
A pencil and watercolour drawing of a standing female figure, full length, wearing a heavy gown, black bowl-shaped hat and a black scarf. Standing in a landscape setting, with Windsor Castle vaguely indicated in the right background, and a hill on the left. Inscribed above and below on the modern mount, probably copied from an earlier one 'Lady Mary Churchill / Aunt to the Duchess of Gloucester'. Lady Mary Churchill was the daughter of Sir Robert Walpole and Maria Skerrett, his second wife. She was the aunt of the Duchess of Gloucester (previously Lady Waldegrave), the daughter of Sir Edward Walpole, Sir Robert's second son. Lady Mary was granted the rank of an Earl's daughter by George II and married Colonel Charles Churchill. In 1764 she succeeded Mrs Handysyde as housekeeper at Windsor Castle, a position she held until 1800.
