Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
The wife of Bob Nunn, Keeper at Sandpit Gate c. 1755
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour | 16.1 x 11.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 914337
-
A pen and ink and watercolour drawing of a seated female figure breastfeeding a baby in striped gown and red socks. A second female figure behind, in shadow. Inscribed on the mount below, probably copied from an earlier inscription, 'The wife of Bob Munn, keeper at Sandpit Gate'.
The inscription probably refers to Robert Nunn, a gardener at Sandpit Gate, where Thomas Sandby lived in Windsor from about 1746 under the employment of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. After settling in London in 1752, Paul Sandby often visited his elder brother at Windsor and made several drawings of domestic scenes at Sandpit Gate.Provenance
Probably from a volume of 134 figure studies acquired (£35) at the Paul Sandby estate sale, 1811
