The Israelites in the Wilderness(?) c. 1640-45
Red-brown oil paint on paper | 29.4 x 41.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 903856
-
A drawing of three people and a pair of dogs gathered under a tree, packing or unpacking their meagre possessions. The central figure stands with heavy drapery, or a rug, thrown over her shoulder. This is at first glance just another ‘landscape with figures’, but in the right distance an angel in a column of cloud or fire appears to a group of kneeling figures. Castiglione deploys rhythmical and strongly drawn contours within a composition that is restrained and clear overall, anticipating much of what was to follow in the 1640s.
Provenance
Probably Carlo II and Fernandino-Carlo Gonzaga, 9th and 10th Dukes of Mantua; Zaccaria Sagredo; from whose heirs purchased by Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, 1752; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
