Guido Reni (Bologna 1575-Bologna 1642)
Saint Jerome c. 1637
Pen and ink | 25.3 x 21.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 903382
-
A schematic drawing of St Jerome, half length facing right, beating a rock against his chest. The drawing corresponds in reverse with a chiaroscuro woodcut of 1637 by Reni's collaborator Bartolomeo Coriolano (Bartsch XII, p. 83, no. 33; a later state at RCIN 807633) and appears to be Reni's model drawing for Coriolano.
See others RCIN 903379-86, and H. McBurney & N. Turner, 'Drawings by Guido Reni for Woodcuts by Bartolomeo Coriolano', Print Quarterly, 1988, pp. 226-42.Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20: p. 80, ‘Guido &c. Tom. 4’, among ‘8 by Guido, with a Pen, For Coriolanus to imitate in Wood-cuts’.
