A satyr seated beside a statue of Priapus c. 1645
Etching | 11.7 x 21.3 cm (platemark) | RCIN 830461
-
An etching of a satyr sitting on the tiered plinth of a statue of Priapus, overshadowed by trees; two satyrs approach from the right with a herd of goats. Inscribed, lower centre; CASTIGLIONE IN. FE. Just as the 1640s saw Castiglione marry the pastoral style with the Roman Grand Manner, so in subject matter he began to populate his landscapes with mythical figures and the detritus of the classical past. This etching, and its pair (RCIN 830462) may be minor works, but they show him to be completely at ease with this amalgam of styles and subjects.
Provenance
Probably Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
