A hand-coloured print depicting Napoleon Bonaparte faced by resistance in all directions. Behind him, a Spanish whirlwind knocks King José off his throne, while he is challenged by Russia (a bear), Austria (an eagle) and the Dutch (shown as marsh-dwelling frogs). The print reflects the spirit of optimism as Wellington and the British army began to gain ground in Spain and northern European countries rose up against Napoleon. Inscribed in the plate: 55 [top left corner] Woodward Del. Pubd/ Augst 23 1808 by Thomas Tegg N.111 Cheapside Rowlandson fe.
