A Japanese sword with a white ray-skin grip decorated with shakuda steela and a menuki in the form of a crane. The pommel and ferrule are decorated with a band of shakudō (an alloy of copper and small amounts of gold, patinated to a purple-black colour) with applied gilt-metal heraldic crests (mon). The curved back-edged steel blade with fuller. Kogai (bodkin) and kozuka of shakudō . Wooden scabbard. The blade signed and dated by Yasumitsu of Osafune Bizen province, 1413.
Provenance
Surrendered by Field Marshal Count Hisaichi Terauchi, Supreme Commander of the Japanese Expeditionary Forces, to Field Marshal Lord Mountbatten in 1945. Subsequently presented by Mountbatten to King George VI.
