Throne canopy 1911-16
Velvet, silk, gilt wood | RCIN 589
-
A domed red velvet throne canopy, surmounted by a crown, with a frieze of egg and dart, the draped upper part embroidered with a crown and elaborately fringed with gold silk tassels; the rear of the canopy with an appliqued and embroidered royal coat of arms with supporters, the drapes bordered with gold silk lozenges and with further tasselled fringing.
Provenance
The throne canopy, which was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was created in 1916 using the heavily gold-embroidered velvet hangings salvaged from the imperial canopy or shamiana made for King George V and Queen Mary's appearance at the Delhi Durbar in 1911. The hangings were considerably reworked in 1967 by the London firm of Heal & Sons.
