In this miniature by Henry Bone the Prince Regent is wearing field marshal’s uniform, miniature ribbons, the Order of the Golden Fleece and the stars of the Orders of the Garter, Holy Spirit, Black Eagle and St Andrew. It is one of many copies of the state portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence, painted in 1814-15, which were made for George IV to give away as presents. Small versions on blue ribbons, like this one, were worn on the shoulder on state occasions.
On the back of the miniature is the monogram GRIV in diamonds beneath a diamond crown.
Provenance
Originally belonged to Charlotte, Queen of Württemberg, sister of King George IV, who bequeathed it to Princess Victoria in 1828; Queen Victoria left it to the Crown. See SJP INS Provenances 92 a.
