The Duke of Connaught's small oval Badge of the Order of St Patrick 1842-43
Enamelled gold | 6.3 x 4.3 cm (whole object) | RCIN 441408
-
Small oval St Patrick's badge. The open centre has a green enamelled trefoil, each leaf charged with a gold and enamelled crown, resting on a red enamelled cross of St Patrick encircled by the motto in letters of carved gold mounted on a light blue enamelled ground surrounded by an outer border of green trefoils running to the right, all within a plain gold frame. The whole is surmounted by a plain gold ring through which the suspension ring passes. This piece is an example of a small privately made Badge for use when the larger official pieces were found awkward to wear. The date of 1842 suggests that it may originally have been acquired by Prince Albert who received the Order that year. It would not have been unusual for Queen Victoria to have given his father's Badge to the Duke of Connaught when he was invested with the St Patrick in 1869.
