A photographic copy by Jabez Hughes after the portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (402480; Royal Collection) painted for Queen Victoria in the year of the Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg's death. A label on the reverse is inscribed in Queen Victoria's hand with the name of the sitter, her beloved half-sister with whom she maintained a frequent correspondence throughout her life.
Jabez Hughes was a photographer of 433 Strand, London (1856 – 61), and 6 Royal Victoria Arcade, Union Street, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight (from 1862). He trained as a daguerreotypist with J.E. Mayall before setting up independently to work as a photographer in Glasgow, London and Ryde. He worked frequently for Queen Victoria.Provenance
