This miniature of Victoria Duchess of Kent is mounted in a gold bracelet, engraved on the reverse with the inscription: 'To /My Beloved Ada / from / her Affectionate Grandmama V / 20th July 1853.' It was given as a gift from the sitter to her granddaughter on the latter's eighteenth birthday. The Duchess of Kent was a constant patron of Faija, and her account books record numerous payments to him between 1849 and 1855. Queen Victoria confirmed in a letter to the Duchess of Sutherland that 'he copies continually for dear Mama Sir William Rosses [sic] miniatures' (RA VIC/ADDA/24/337). This particular miniature is without doubt copied after a miniature by Sir William Ross; the source may have been the Duchess of Kent's 'picture (in a bracelet) painted by Ross and excessively like' which Queen Victoria received as a Christmas gift from her mother on 24 December 1837 (current location unknown). The Duchess is shown in the miniature as she appeared in the late 1830s and not in 1853.
Provenance
Given to Princess Adelaide of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, second daughter of Princess Feodora of Hohenlohe-Langenburg by her grandmother, Victoria, Duchess of Kent, in 1853; purchased by Queen Mary in 1930 and given to the Royal Collection.
