Haslem's miniature shows Queen Victoria wearing her wedding wreath of orange-blossom flowers and her wedding veil, the sapphire brooch given to her as a wedding gift by Prince Albert, the small collar of the Garter and the Turkish diamond earrings and necklace. The miniature is based on the portrait painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter as a gift from the Queen to Prince Albert in 1847 on the anniversary of their wedding (400885; Royal Collection) and hung in the Prince Consort's Dressing Room at Windsor Castle. The miniature itself hung in the Prince Consort's Writing Room at Buckingham Palace.
Haslem's miniature is slightly large in scale than most of his enamels and is an exceptionally good example of his work. It was one of a number of miniatures for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert which he exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 (Great Exhibition 1851 II, p. 835, no. 237: 'The Queen in her bridal dress') and represented the culmination of his work for the royal family. By 1857, he had retired to Derby, where he had begun his career as a porcelain painter at the Derby China Works, living on there until 1884.Provenance
Commissioned by Queen Victoria from the artist in 1848 and given by her to Prince Albert on 24 May 1848 (her birthday).
