Juliana (1781-1860) was the youngest daughter of Francis, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. In 1798, she married the Grand Duke Constantine of Russia and became known as the Grand Duchess Anna Feodorovna. The marriage was not successful. Juliana returned to Coburg in 1801 and, after 19 years of separation from her husband, the marriage was dissolved in 1820. She was the aunt of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Miniature portraits of her sisters, Sophia and Antoinette, are also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 420805-6).
It is thought that the artist may have been Carl Herman Pfeiffer (1769-1829). Pfeiffer was born in Frankfurt but settled in Vienna, working mainly as an engraver of portraits by other Austrian miniaturists, but he is known to have painted some miniatures himself.
The inscription is unclear, but the miniature may be signed and dated: BO & P ...9.Provenance
First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1870
