Part of a set of miniatures by Moira (also including 420517, 420519 and 420522) of four of the five surviving children of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Marie, Grand Duchess of Russia, painted either at Clarence House, their London home at this time, or during one of their summer visits to Osborne House where they occupied Osborne Cottage. Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh is shown aged three and a half, wearing a pale-pink dress trimmed with lace and pink ribbons, and a pendant with the interlaced initials VR around her neck on a gold chain.
Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh, third daughter of Prince Alfred of Edinburgh and Marie Alexandrovna, Grand Duchess of Russia. She married, in 1896, Ernest, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, by whom she had five children.
Signed in red paint along the left edge: E. Moira ft. and inscribed on the reverse in ink: PRINCESS ALEXANDRA OF EDINBURGH /and signed and dated: Painted by E. Moira / 1881. Provenance
