Part of a set of miniatures by Moira (also including 420517, 420521-2) of four of the five surviving children of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, and Marie, Grand Duchess of Russia, painted either at Clarence House, their London home at this time, or during one of their summer visits to Osborne House where they occupied Osborne Cottage. Princess Marie is shown aged five and a half years old, wearing a pink dress trimmed with lace and pink ribbons and a pendant with the interlaced initials VR around her neck on a gold chain.
Signed in red paint along the left edge: E. Moira ft. and inscribed on the reverse: PRINCESS MARIE OF EDINBURGH /and signed and dated: Painted by E. Moira / 1881. Provenance
