Completed, according to the inscription on the reverse of the frame, in April 1846 as the second in the sequence of miniatures of the children of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert painted when each child was five years old. In the same year the Prince of Wales was also memorably painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter at full-length, dressed in a sailor suit (404873; Royal Collection).
