Princess Louis of Hesse, second daughter of Queen Victoria, is shown holding her eldest child, Princess Victoria, in her arms. Princess Louis of Hesse wears a white day dress trimmed with purple braid in this image on ivory which derives from a three-quarter-length photograph taken in Darmstadt by F. Backhofen (RCIN 2900800). That print is dated December 1863, but another version in the Royal Photographic Collection (RCIN 2941291) is dated to August of the same year, when the infant, born on 5 April at Windsor Castle, would have been four months old. The landscape background has been added in the miniature.
