This is a copy by Frank Reynolds of Winterhalter's portrait of the Princess Royal (RCIN 404580).
Princess Victoria was Queen Victoria's eldest daughter. She met her future husband, Prince Frederick William of Prussia, when he came with his parents to the opening of the Great Exhibition on 1 May 1851. She was 11 years old and he was 21. They became engaged in 1855 and married in 1858. The Princess's costume was altered from that in the original painting, however, by Frederick Say, to show the Princess's wedding dress and place the Order of Louise beside the Order of Victoria and Albert.
Inscribed on the back with the names of the artists involved in the copy and the date, 1858.Provenance
