Before a symmetrical temple and a paved piazza the Virgin and Joseph are married by a clergyman. Men are gathered behind Joseph and women are gathered behind the Virgin; all are shown at full-length.
This is a copy of identical dimensions of the altarpiece of 1500-4 from the Duomo in Perugia, now in the Musée at Caen. The copyist, Camille Payen, was a Flemish painter active in Paris c. 1850; his / her authorship is documented in Prince Albert’s accounts.Provenance
