Portrait of a Small Boy c.1550-70
Oil on canvas | 40.6 x 30.8 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406402
-
Head and shoulders portrait of an infant, facing the spectator, his head turned half to the left. His left hand is raised to his collar; with his right hand he is clutching a peach in front of him. He wears a grey-green slashed dress loosely over a white shirt, and a chain over his shoulders.
There is another version of this portrait in the Clark Collection at Williamstown, Massachusetts, which is thought to be German sixteenth century. This version is apparently Italian but has no very distinct technique or stylistic character. The slashed costume (generally worn with a short coat over it) is found in Veneto child-portraiture c. 1560, for example in Veronese’s Supper at Emmaus (Louvre).Provenance
Acquired by Prince Albert in Rome in 1839 as by Veronese (Rough Catalogue no 10a); recorded in the Prince's Writing at Osborne House in 1876 (no 123)
