An oil painting of the Death of Cleopatra. Cleopatra, at three-quarter-length, leans her mostly naked body against cushions to the right, her left elbow resting on the top with the asp curled about her upper arm; her head inclines backwards, her eyes closed; a maid servant to the left.
This is one of a number of copies of the painting attributed to Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540) in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Braunschweig, c.1525-30.Provenance
Acquired by Charles I before his accession; recorded at Nonesuch Palace n 1639 (no 12); sold from there for £7 to John Jackson and others on 23 October 1651 (no 18); recovered at the Restoration and listed in the King's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 127)
