Van Gaelen was an Amsterdam battle painter who studied with Huchtenburgh (see 404896-901) and settled in England c. 1700. This work can be attributed to him by comparison with other works of the same date. A version of this composition appeared on the art market in 1954 with William III instead of Queen Anne in the coach, suggesting that some artistic 're-cycling' may be going on.
Watched by lines of spectators, Queen Anne, in her state coach, pulled by eight grey horses, passes through St James's Park towards the old Horse Guards, preceded by a coach and followed by an Escort of Household Cavalry; the coach is guarded by a group of footmen and Yeomen of the Guard.Provenance
Bought by George IV at the sale of his brother, the Duke of York, in 1827 as a Tillemans; recorded at Carlton House as an addition to the inventory dated 1819 (no 609)
