-
This late work depicts a more idyllic and Italianate scene than many of Wouwermans’s paintings, with a trellis for the drinkers and a mountainous distance. A lady and gentleman halting at a wayside inn, both mounted, are before an inn on the right; the gentleman drinks, while the lady talks to the landlord; behind, a horse held by its rider and a boy; on the left, a road bordered by a river. Signed lower left: 'PHILS W'
Provenance
Purchased by George IV in 1810; recorded in the ante room to the Dining Room at Carlton House in 1819 (no 106), valued at 250 guineas; in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 125)
