This is a copy of an original portrait, signed and dated 1813, in the Dutch Royal Collection at Het Loo, showing the Prince of Orange in the uniform of the ADC to a Commander-in-Chief, wearing a Peninsular medal. The sitter fought with distinction at the Battle of Waterloo, commanding the Dutch and Belgian forces. He was the favoured suitor of George IV's daughter, Princess Charlotte, until she rejected him in 1814 and chose Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg instead. He reformed and liberalised the Dutch monarchy upon his accession in 1840. This is a very characteristic image of a allied soldier at this date, with its expression of almost religious enthusiasm.
