  • Tentatively identified as Johann August, second surviving son of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1691-1732) and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. His youngest sister, Augusta, became Princess of Wales on her marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1736. Depicted wearing military uniform with scarlet facings embroidered with silver, aiguillettes and a powdered curled tie-wig; holding a cocked hat with an orange bow.

     

    Part of set of 5 paintings of similar dimensions, possibly by two hands, recorded in Store at Carlton House in 1816 (nos 351-5). This included portraits of his two sisters, Fredericka and Augusta, and possibly Christian Wilhelm, his younger brother (RCINs 404499, 404500, 406407, 404497, 406408).

    Probably acquired by George IV, recorded without attribution or identification in the Store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 355) and 1819 (no 458, valued at one guinea)
