Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-60) Signed and dated 1660
Oil on canvas | 138.5 x 101.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404436
-
This portrait was presumably painted in The Hague before the Princess's arrival in London on 25th September 1660, where she was to die three months later. It was perhaps the last portrait of the Princess painted from life by Hanneman, although the head is similar to a portrait in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
Provenance
First recorded as an overmantle at the Château de Colombes in 1669 (no 32); in store at St James's Palace in 1688 (no 1230); it seems to have hung in St James's throughout in the 18th century, in the Queen's Dressing Room (1710 & 1720) and the State Bedcahmber (1785); it can certainly be identified in the Old Dining Room at Buckingham Palace in 1819 (no 821)
