This is a copy by Frederick Say of Winterhalter’s painting of 1850 of Queen Victoria and her third son Arthur (RCIN 405963). The Queen was especially fond of Arthur, writing of him ‘The Child is dear, dearer than any of the others put together’. Here she sits with him on the terrace at Osborne on the Isle of Wight, with the spiky leaves of the giant agave plant silhouetted against the Solent and contrasting with the soft folds of the Queen’s dress. She described the original as ‘perhaps one of Winterhalter’s most charming pictures’. Inscribed on the back as a copy by Say after Winterhalter.
Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria in June 1859; recorded in the State Visitors' Sitting Room no 227 at Buckingham Palace in 1869
