Unknown Prince of Saxe Gotha, possibly Prince Johann August c. 1720-50
Oil on canvas | 80.4 x 65.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403532

The identity of the sitter is not confirmed. It may depict John August of Saxe-Gotha (1704-67), the second surviving son of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst, or possibly Francis Josias, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (1697-1764). The resemblance to the latter is possibly closer (see RCINs 406474, 610019). Depicted wearing an ermine and red velvet robe over armour; a baton in his left hand, with a helmet and a cross of the order of Malta on a table on the left.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV, recorded without attribution or identification in Store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 341) and 1819 (no 254)
