The Virgin lies in the centre of a spacious room, her enlarged head leaning on her left shoulder to read a book held open by a male Saint. Surrounding her deathbed are the twelve Apostles each expressing grief for the imminent loss of the Virgin. They appear to be either in prayer or performing the last ceremonies. To the left of the room is a table with bread, linens and various vessels upon it.
There seems to be a date inscribed into the foot of the bed but it is difficult to read. Gruner, writing in 1848, believed it read 1417 (in Roman Numerals) whereas Waagen (1854) sees it as 1423. It has since been stylistically dated c.1450.Provenance
One of the group of early German works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 21 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
