-
This portrait must date from the 1740s and is of considerable quality, suggesting that it may have been painted from the life. The artist could be German and the work executed in Hanover. The King is shown in armour wearing an ermine-lined cloak over a cuirass with the riband of the Order of the Garter, and a long wig; he is holding a baton in his left hand.
Provenance
Acquired by George IV in 1810; recorded in the Rose Satin Room in 1819 (no 20), where it appears as an overdoor in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (922180); taken to the Grand Corridor at Windsor Castle in 1829
