Nothing is known of Wilson beyond the signiture on this painting and the fact that George Vertue mentioned a Wilson, 'who painted fowles birds of no great reputation, afterwards was auctioneer'. A greyhound bitch, seated on a red cushion in a landscape with trees and a classical villa in the background. Signed: 'G: Wilson Pt [pinxit]'
Provenance
First recorded in store at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 99) as the 'Late Queen Mary's dog'; on the King's Back Stair at Kensington Palace in 1720 as 'a greyhound called "Nymph"'; still there in 1732 (when the room is called the 'Pictured Staircase') as Wilson; in the Passage at Kensington in 1818 (no 453) with the same attribution.
