This is an oil sketch for the figure of the Prince in Wilkie's depiction of Princess Victoria's first presentation at Court (OM 1187, 404710) of 1831. Presumably this was a study made from the life - its liveliness is certainly astonishing and shows Wilkie competing with Rubens amongst the old masters and Sir Thomas Lawrence amongst his contemporaries.

Given by the Duchess of Kent to Queen Victoria; recorded in the 'Wilkie Bedroom' at Buckingham Palace in 1858
