Princess Victoria probably received this painting from her mother on her birthday. The painting depicts favourite pets of the Princess. In the autumn of 1829 she rode Beauty, a piebald pony, almost every morning. In 1831, at Norris Castle, she rode Beauty while Baroness Lehzen rode Tommy, the grey. In 1832 ‘Old Beauty’ was retired but in the same year the Duchess of Sutherland gave another piebald of the same name to the Princess. Fanny was given to her after Christmas in 1832. Signed and dated: G Morley / 1832.
Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria, when Princess Victoria, by the Duchess of Kent; recorded in the Queen's Private Apartments at Buckingham Palace in 1876
