Oil on canvas | 122.2 x 99.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 401223
-
Three-quarter-length portrait of Charles II (1630-85), standing in armour, wearing the chain of the Garter, holding a baton in his right hand, and resting his left hand on a helmet below the crown and sceptre. The canvas appears to have been left unfinished by Lely and was probably completed later, possibly in Lely's studio. At a still later period the canvas was enlarged to a full-length but the additions were removed in 1955.
