This is one of a pair (see RCIN 400934) of freely-worked oval copies, in reduced format, the full-length portraits by Gainsborough exhibited at the RA in 1781 (RCIN 401406 and 401407). The quality of the painting is sufficient to suggest that Gainsborough himself might be the artist.

Probably acquired by Queen Victoria; recorded hanging in Lancaster Tower at Windsor Castle in 1859
